Distinguished music writer Paul Griffiths, author of A Concise History of Western Music, tackles the question of music’s relationship with time. Charting a thousand years in music, he takes us from the endlessly circling time of plainchant to the progressive time of eighteenth-century music, the inner psychological time of the Romantics, to the dissolution of bar-lines and the search by 20th century composers for time-frames beyond human experience.
