These programmes reflect three different aspects of the Schubert Ensemble's repetoire. The first features Schubert and the much-loved Trout Quintet, which gives the Ensemble its unusual line-up of instruments, including double bass. The second, featuring two English composers, reflects the Ensemble's enthusiasm for both commissioning new works and for championing neglected works from the past. The virtuosic American Rounds by Martin Butler contrast with Vaughan Williams' richly romantic early Piano Quintet. The third finishes with the radiant Schumann Piano Quintet, one of the greatest masterworks of the repertoire for piano and string quartet, which was written shortly after his marriage to Clara Wieck.
