Empirical "could turn out to be one of the most important bands in UK history" (Jazzwise). They have come a very long way in a very short time, winning a clutch of international awards to back their assured and absorbing live performances, and taking North America by storm in a recent tour.
This is a quintet that's immersed in the jazz tradition, but with a keen eye on the future - trumpeter Jay Phelps, saxophonist Nathaniel Facey, pianist Kit Downes (this years BBC Jazz Awards Rising Star), bassist Tom Farmer and drummer Shaney Forbes combine their individual skills to create a powerful group dynamic and an irrepressible joie-de-vivre that runs throughout the music. Spotted by no less than Courtney Pine, who released their debut CD on his Destinee label, Empirical are at the heart of today's jazz generation.
